High Table Dinner 2014



Studying is not the only means of becoming an academic person. High Table Dinner, 
an HKU tradition originated from English universities' High Table, is an event in
which intellectual exchange among students can be fostered in an academic dining 
environment. This year, we are delighted to announce that we are organising a High 
Table Dinner for you who enjoy Linguistics!

Date: 25th September, 2014 (Thursday)
Time: 7 - 9 p.m. (Reception will begin at 6:30 p.m.)
Venue: Eliot Room, 14F K K Leung Building

Fee: $200 (members) / $240 (non-members)
Dress Code: Formal (Green gowns will be provided)

Linguistics Festival 2014


The annual Linguistics Festival was successfully organised in March! 
The theme of the Festival this year is ‘You are What You Speak’, in relation to the 
area of language and identity. Do you want to know the ways to differentiate real 
and fake ABC’s? What does code-mixing tell us about Hong Kong people’s identities? 
How do professionals identify criminals through linguistics means? Linguistics Festival 
will provide more interesting information about language and identity!

Academic Talk:

Content: Can you go through a day without speaking English? Is your Cantonese “pure”? 
The talk is going to look into how English unconsciously slips into our tongue.

Content: Don’t forget to take a look at our display boards outside Starbucks after

Annual Publication
Content: How can the use of languages reveal our true identity? We have prepared a 
series of feature articles, which includes deceptive language, English accents, 
forensic linguistics and of course fake ABC!

Bazaar 2014


Linguistics Society presents you our ‘Nostalgic Elegance’ Bazaar with the theme of nostalgia! 
There will be snacks, notebooks, accessories and all kinds of products, there must be something
for you. As lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day draw near, we also prepared a series of seasonal 
gifts and decorations for you to get ready. During the week before the special 14th February, 
the Valentine gift set will be for sale, hoping to bring sweetness to your day.
The sweetness is not enough? There will be clamped candies and instant photo taking service 
such that those priceless moments with your loved ones can be captured.
